[Widget Development] Windows SideShow Gadget Contest & Developer Tools Announced!

Hi everybody,

This is Toby from the Windows SideShow team - just wanted to give a heads up about some new developments and a gadget contest that were recently announced.

First, if you're not familiar, SideShow is platform that allows you to extend information from and control of your computer to peripheral devices via a gadget (widget) interface. This allows you to get frequently accessed information from your PC and control media playback, PowerPoint presentations, etc. from displays other than your main PC screen – helpful when you want to get information away from your PC, when your PC is asleep, or when you are using your PC to play a game or watch a movie. Gadgets may be written specifically for Windows SideShow, and Windows Sidebar gadgets can be extended to work with Windows SideShow.

Recently, we've released two new developer tools--a developer preview of Windows SideShow for Windows Mobile, which allows you to use any Windows Mobile 5 or 6 phone as a wireless SideShow device, and a Managed SDK which allows easy development of SideShow gadgets in VB or C#. Additionally, we are teaming up with nVidia to sponsor a contest for the best gadgets produced. Finalists will receive roundtrip airfare to attend nVidia’s nVision event in San Jose, CA (August 25–27) where the winning gadget will be selected by a panel of judges. The winner will receive a SideShow-enabled Dell XPS 420 system and have their gadget featured on the front page of NZONE.com, included in the NVIDIA newsletter, and the Windows SideShow section of Microsoft’s Windows Live Gallery. The contest ends July 18th.

Hope you find this interesting - thanks and have a great day!

Toby
Program Manager, Windows SideShow

[Request-a-Widget] Weather Service Needs Simple Desktop WINDOWS Widget Developed:)-D

Ok let's get into background what I do.

I am a meteorologist and have a website that thousands visit. I am doing it all for free right now. I need to step it up for my visitors and have them download a widget for their computer desktop. This widget information will be controlled by me and my staff to update weather watches and warnings from us and links to visit.

1. The widget must have a small window displaying a .jpg file from our site/server it can be pulled off upon updating the .jpg file via the website.

2. The widget must have a section where text will be visible and a link if possible for the people. The text would be weather watches and warnings we issue.
The widget must update automatically as we upload to the server.

3. We must have full control of the information our viewers see on the widget.

If you can do this simple project for our viewers then please let me know!

I am putting a base price on it and will await bids. What my base price is in this website can be negotiated. Let me know how complex this is.

Just need a very simple pull of my .jpg file to a window, and enabling text with links to be added in the widget when we issue watches/warnings/updates.

Thanks and please respond.

I'm looking for a company to develop an audio player widget, primarily for viral marketing and sampling of audiobooks.

It should be able to play from about 5 minutes to about an hour of streaming audio (though mp3 downloads are also an option).

It should have room for merchandising/showcasing related books, deep-linking to retailers, post-ability on the major social networking sites, and some tracking capability (clicks on "buy" links, and so forth).

This is, of course, a paid job. I have about a 3-month timeframe.

Please email me at barbara.lilie@harpercollins.com if interested. Thanks!

Our small company provides power and cooling solutions to data centers. We would like to have a widget designed that customers could put on their google home page, vista sidebar, etc... The widget would be a quick reference tool for converting power and cooling data. I would envision a series of small text boxes each with a title above for Watts, VA, BTU, CFM, Amps @ 120v, Amps @ 208v, etc. If anything is input into one of the boxes it automatically fills in the rest (mathmatical formulas). Naturally, we would like our logo on there and preferably the ability to have a dynamic single line link for product announcements. Open to other design ideas but it should be relatively small in size.

We are willing to pay. Get back to me if you have an interest.

Hi,
I’m looking for a Widget Developer (Not a Consulting Firm) that can work well in a .Net and SQL 2005 environment. I’m open to suggestions but thinking a JavaScript/HTML solution would be easier to embed into blogging platforms, social networking platforms and web sites. Please see high level scope below.

5 Screens
1. Splash Screen (Instructions and Context)
2. Registration/Login (Connecting to existing site)
3. Topic Selection (~ 400 Topics are pulled from a DB and can be filtered, displaying 50 at a time)
4. Screen to Capture Answers to Question (10 to 15 questions sent back to the DB)
5. RSS Type Display that would display aggregated Answers. (From the DB)

Please note if you have Design and/or HTML/CSS capabilities. I have a designer but have found it easier if one person is responsible for the entire solution. Additional info is available upon request (confidentiality / non-compete agreement required).

Thanks,

Hello, my name is Joseph and I'd like to introduce you to a new site that lets users store widgets from any website and access them easily and instantly using the Duhiki toolbar. Duhiki just went live recently, and while we beta test we’re looking for developers with desirable widgets to showcase in our gallery.

From our website, or any website that provides embedded widget code, users can add widgets directly to the Duhiki toolbar, where they can always be accessed as long as the browser is open. So think of Duhiki as a bookmark for your favorite widgets. And with your widgets hosted on Duhiki.com, users can add your application to the toolbar with one simple click.

In exchange for providing us with your feedback and your content, and helping to expand our selection of widgets, your products will gain more exposure and your website will see more traffic as we start to ramp up promotions for Duhiki in the coming months. If that’s not enough incentive, consider this: we’ll also be judging every submitted widget and rewarding the top developer with a $250 gift certificate to Amazon.com, along with a week in the spotlight as our featured widget on the Duhiki.com homepage! To participate, please submit your details at http://duhiki.com/submitawidget.php, or reply to me at this email address with your name, the name of the widget, and the URL where the widget is located. We will then contact you to coordinate obtaining the necessary Flash/HTML/JavaScript files to get your widget hosted on Duhiki.com. But hurry - the deadline to submit and be eligible for our contest is Friday, June 27th!

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,
Joseph Ghartey

I posted previously about this and I just wanted to give an update. DivX runs a plug-ins contest for their DivX Connected platform. The submission deadline is coming up and there are not that many plug-ins in the contest so far. That said, the chances are pretty high you win a DivX Connected media player from D-Link. Anyone with basic HTML and/or JavaSctipt can participate. There are already some cool plug-ins available like Gmaps, Flickr, etc. You can find the SDK, PC client and other related information on DivX Labs.

Checkt it out and let me know if you have any questions.

Hello,

I am a London based software developer and I think that I have the experience that you need. I have developed over 15 widgets using Yahoo! Widgets, Flash or Adobe AIR. I'd be happy to discuss with you what would be the best technology for your project.

The widgets I developed include RSS readers, calendars, clocks or, in general, widgets that interact with web services (such as Google Calendar or eBay). Please have a look at my portfolio for some examples:

Although I haven't worked yet with a government body, I do have experience working with departments of large organizations, as I worked with the UNESCO for two projects.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at:

Hi,

I'm looking to have a widget developed that works like this, if it's possible:

users anser a variety of multiple choice questions, i.e. "You would rather: a. go skydiving, b. go fishing, c. go shopping, d. go to bed"

After a series of questions, users are shown an image of their "perfect" earrings, and can then purchase them without having to leave their page.

Does this make sense? The site that contains the products is currently ASP but can be migrated to PHP and runs from an Access database, which can be converted to mysql, if it's easier.

Each item in the database will have various tags, etc, and based upon the user input from the quize a list of approximately 20 images will be a match, of which one product will be randomly selected as that user's "perfect" product.

Let me know if I'm being unclear here, it's a little difficult to explain in detail. Payment at your rate, hourly or by project, requires both Non-Disclosure and Non-compete to be signed in addition to standard contract.

If you're interested, send me an email @ tabitha (dot) fleming @ gmail (dot) com
